Review for Satellite Internet---Broad Band Best or Worst

Satellite Internet was a boon to rural broad band service. Several years ago all we country dwellers could expect was snail-slow dial up. Then came wireless, DSL, and cable, but only in a few areas. My area still can't get anything except wireless and Satellite-oh, and the old familiar Dial-up. I grew old waiting for my pages to come up on dial up. So when I first heard of Satellite Internet, Lord, I thought I was in hog heaven!

Starband Broad Band Satellite was my first purchase and we spent several wonderful years together shooting enormous amounts of information back and forth via satellite. What a wonderful invention! The Starband equipment was first rate and never gave me a problem. They even allowed me my first modem upgrade for free-although first initial setup was expensive enough to have covered several upgrades---over $700. Now that they have several competitors, they have come down considerably in installation and equipment fees-somewhere around $300. And that is about the going rate for all the systems on today's market. Some do, however, run specials-free installation, monthly payments, etc.

Pros for Starband:

  1. Exceptional equipment---no problems over a seven year period.
  2. Quick Service---representatives were quick to answer service calls.
  3. Knowledgeable Tech Support----Tech support could always solve problems by phone.
Cons for Starband:

  1. Tech support and Representatives can barely speak English----makes resolving Issues a big problem when customer speaks only English.

Would You Recommend Starband: Yes.

About a year ago I switched to Hughes Net. Don't ask me why, because even I don't have a clue. My system was getting old and I had read an article that told me great things about Hughes Net. Less expensive than most broad band, faster more reliable service. And this one time I didn't listen to my old grandad-" If it ain't broke, don't fix it!", I fell for all the flowery advertisements and ordered Hughes Net. Second biggest mistake of my life! We won't get into the first.

Pros for Hughes Net:

  1. Friendly sales staff.

Cons for Hughes Net:

  1. Very poor equipment---started going down hill in less than a month (only 1 month Warranty).
  2. Service is very poor---can't get anyone to come out short of a week.
  3. Internet Speed very Poor.
  4. Service repair personnel totally uneducated in their jobs.---Made three trips out to my house and still had to have tech support tell him what the problem was.
  5. Billing issues---charged me for the repairman having to come out and aim my dish at a different Satellite.
  6. Tech Support and Representatives speak even poorer English than Starband's.
  7. Tech support hard to reach and when they do finally answer you get cut off before they have even begun to resolve your issue. When you do get cut off, they will not call you back; you have to call back and then you get a different rep and have to start all over again!
Would You Recommend Hughes Net? Unequivocal NO!

If you are looking for Satellite Internet check out all the different brands and read their reviews. Wild Blue is just a sub of Hughes Net, so I'm sure they are no better than Hughes Net.

Should cable ever come out our way, that is probably the way I will go next.

Good luck in your surfing endeavors.

Sandra,

Great article! When it comes to the choices, it can be a tough decision and you laid it out well.

I loved your words in the first paragraph and could hear Minnie Pearl saying those exact words. Could be the hat!

Thanks, Nancy.  I hadn't thought of that---all I need is a hanging tag.

kA lot of information. When mom was still alive, she didn't want cable what so ever! But when I was taking care of her when she dying she actually put cable in for me, which I though was a nice gesture. Anyway, she grew up in the old school and didn't want any of it accept regular television! It took her a long while before she bought a microwave!
