Seven Days of Thanksgiving

Monday morning the alarm goes off at 5:00 a.m. bringing me up through the dream-stages of sleep. I have found a huge handful of gold coins on the ground and wrapping my fingers around them, I desperately clutch them so as to bring them with me as I leave the dream. Disappointment fills me as roll over, shut off the alarm, and look down at my empty hand. Monday. Who could possibly say that Monday is their favorite day of the week? Being a working person, Monday was always just the beginning of five-and sometimes six-days of drudgery. It also stood for the end of a very short period of rest, relax, and fun-the weekend. Therefore, it became my least favorite day of the week. But maybe Monday just gets a bad rap. We could look at it as being a beginning-the beginning of a new week, the first day of the rest of your life, so to speak. And looking at it from this new perspective, we should give thanks for this new day, this first day of a new week-Monday. A day for fresh starts and new horizons.
Wednesday a normal week ‘hump day'. This one will take me over the hump and I'll be headed downhill now toward the weekend. But, since tomorrow is a Holiday, I have good reason to be thankful on this day-only one day of work left this week! My goodness, I do love this day! Believe it or not, it was actually much easier to get out of bed this morning. The simple fact that if I make it through this one day, I am facing a long awaited long-weekend and my enthusiasm for this day grows with each passing minute. ‘Thank you, Lord, for Wednesday. The day that my heart, mind, and soul begins to revive and my spirit rekindles.
Thursday, November __, ________. Another Thanksgiving Holiday has arrived. The house is in a fog of good smells-pies on the side board, turkey just leaving the oven, fresh bread just beginning to brown. Not needing an alarm this morning, I have been up and cooking since the first ray of dawn. And as I remove the turkey from the oven, I hear the laughter and commotion of family and friends arriving at the front door. Kids and grandkids swarm the kitchen and dining room with oohs and ahhs at the table decorations and the wide variety of steaming dishes vying for space. As I look around the table at all the smiling faces, I don't have to wonder what I need to be thankful for on this day. Good food, good health, love of a good family and friends, I bow my head with everyone and express my thanks for all that God has given me on this day, this special Thanksgiving Thursday.
Friday after Thanksgiving, still part of the Holiday. I have no alarm set this morning. I stretch and yawn and rolling over, snuggle deeper into the warm comforter. Sleepily smiling, it feels so good to be alive. Eight o'clock and the house is still quiet-out-of-towners who have spent the night, still sleeping off the pounds and pounds of roast turkey and pumpkin pie consumed the day before. Friday morning and I give thanks for three more glorious days of rest and reparation. Time to spend with family, time to share with loved ones. Thank you, God, for another beautiful day to practice faith and fellowship. My heart tells me that Friday is a very good day.
Saturday has now arrived, bright and sunny or cold and rainy, it is still Saturday. For me another day of no work, a day for shopping perhaps? Pre-Christmas sales will be filling all the shopping malls with crowds of shoppers. A good day to get out and join the throngs of people excitedly searching for that one special gift for that one special person. Saturday just seems to instill in a person a feeling of completeness, a feeling of wealth and happiness. Friday's-paycheck-burning-a-hole-my-pocket kind of day. Sometimes I find it hard to explain the thankful feeling that Saturday brings and I just give thanks for the day.
Sunday. Whether the beginning of a week or the end of a week, Sunday is the proverbial day of rest. The Thanksgiving Day Holidays are over and my mind starts preparing for the inevitable-Monday. But as I dress for Church, I push down the slightly blue-tinted feelings of a beautiful week come and gone too quickly. The Seven Days of Thanksgiving are coming to a close. We stand and sing God's praises and my heart fills with a joy that is hard to contain. And I give thanks for this the Sabbath, God's day, a gift to all who love Him and keep the Sabbath Holy.
Thanksgiving can be celebrated every day of the week, we only have to look around us to find a reason to give thanks.
