Global Warming----Is There a Practical Solution?

Just like all issues facing today’s economy and today’s environment, there are two sides to every coin. And every suggested solution proposed to help alleviate the problem of global warming has its pros and cons---actually there is even controversy as to whether global warming is even a true issue. There are even skeptics out there that feel that global warming, if it does exist, is not caused by human fallibility but rather by the quirks of nature itself.

Although, nature may have to accept some responsibility for the dilemma (and I for one do truly believe that global warming does exist) that we are currently facing, I have a tendency to lean more toward the belief that we as a thinking and acting species who have considerable control over our own destinies are the main players in this performance of global dominions.

Scientists have produced data that purportedly proves that the oceans are becoming warmer causing more and more traumatic hurricanes, tidal waves; the weather is becoming warmer causing severe trauma to the upper atmosphere; the ice caps are melting; new lakes are forming causing land masses to shrink. And if the bulk of these disasters are caused by people, why does the human race find it so hard to agree on a practical solution to resolve the issue?

First and foremost is the problem of “what do I wish to give up to help resolve this issue?" Do I want hundreds or thousands of wind fans cluttering the scenery in front of my million-dollar home just so electricity can be cleanly produced for millions of homes?

Some one with a million-dollar home with an unrestricted view of the ocean probably has a lot of pull with the higher ups on that regulatory committee.

Then there is nuclear power---clean air, probably the most practical and environmentally friendly of all solutions; but where to dump the waste????

It seems that the only thing anyone would agree to agree on was that Freon and aerosol spray cans were harmful to the ozone and use of these was restricted.

Auto emissions, another harbinger of legend makes it truly hard for me to believe that positively no one has been able to come up with a fuel source that could have started clearing the air around this issue more than fifty years ago! I will always and forever believe that the oil magnates of the world---even more so those in our own country--- who would have the most to lose if oil lost its market value, have closed the damper permanently on this solution. In my opinion if there ever was a practical solution, this was it and we should only hope and pray that any practical solution found will not be too late for our children.

Enjoyed your article Sandra, yes it seems any ingenious discovery to clean up our environment and find solutions to many of our problems would be resisted by those who would lose financially. But isn’t that the way it’s always been?

Sandra good article. Sad but true; the people with the most influence and ability to affect change are generally the ones with the most to lose by those very changes and therefore have a hidden agenda to ensure that no changes are made. Exxon for example is guilty of publishing numerous "scientific studies", if you can call them that, decrying global warming and implying it is a non-issue that is being promoted for political gain. Just think about it, the largest energy company in the world is funding reports that are coming out suggesting global warming is naturally occuring and not influenced in any way by the fuels we are consuming at a prodigious rate. What a suprise! And yet these same "bogus" reports are often quoted as the "division within the scientific community", "ongoing heated debate" and "scepticism regarding global warming".
